DOWN AND DIRTY REVIEWS:  NINTENDO64

I love my N64, and I own and had a lot of games for it.  Don't be too angry by some of these reviews though.  I don't like most First Person Shooters (FPS) but I like most normal Shooters (Spaceships and stuff).  Also there won't be a lot of sports games in either.  These are just my opinions, you may have different taste or something.
The scores are out of 100!

SCORE NAME

71 1080 SNOW BOARDING (Nintendo, May 1998)
It's plays just like Wave Race64 but only on the snow. It's OK but it's nothing too special and doesn't really move fast enough so it lacks any real intensity.

30 AERO FIGHTERS ASSAULT
a slow and painful 3D flight shooter.

NEW!!
27 AIDYN CHRONICLES: The First Mage (THQ/H2O, April 2001)
One dam ugly looking RPG with boring exploring and confusing menus. Don't believe any of the hype behind this game has being the only true N64 RPG, play Paper Mario or Quest64 (two actually good RPGs) instead.

92 BANJO KAZOOIE (Nintendo/Rare, July 1998)
One of the best 3D adventure games of all time with some amazing graphics. The only downside is the corny music and the games short length. A great 128meg game!

95 BANJO TOOIE (Nintendo/Rare, November 2000)

84 CASTLEVANIA (Konami, January 1999)
Here is the first ever CastleVania game in 3D and if you're a hardcore fan of the series than you don't wanna miss this one game. After another 100years of sleep, Count Dracula is ready to raise again and only two warriors dare enter the house of horrors to try and stop him.
Reinhardt Screndier, a descentent of the Belmont family, has been training for this day when he learns of his doomed bloodline.
Carrie Fenizeal is a young spellcaster who's mother was killed by a angry mob who thought she was a witch, now she enters Castlevania to prove her power isn't evil.
It's a little confusing at first but this game easily becomes more in depth level by level, plus there are two characters to choose from and each adventure is different with two endings for each.

CASTLEVANIA: Legacy Of Darkness  (Konami, December 1999)
Now you control a new character (Cornell) with a new storyline, plus there is more secrets to unlock this time. The Expansion Pak doesn't improve anything it looks like...... it just weakens the frame rate. Better than the first one for the N64 overall and a must for Castlevania fans. I love the music in the Art Tower.

69 CHEF'S LUV SHACK (Acclaim, 1999)
A cool game show game with immature mature material. Pointless one player mode. but this is the best version of Luv Shack because of the lack of load times. I love the Donkey Kong and Asteriod clones in the mini games. 1player mode is pretty pointless.

CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY (Nintendo/Rareware, March 6, 2001)
Finally! A 3D platformer for the adults. Very similar to Super Mario 64 and the Banjo series, but this game has lots of blood, foul language, and bodily fluids and is unlike any Nintendo game before it. Conker adventure's thought 9different levels to avoid becoming a table post for an giant panther. The camera can be a pain in certain areas and the frame rate is a little sluggish but it's easily the best I played this year. Many great and funny multiply player games too. Buy it!

86 DIDDY KONG RACING (Nintendo/Rare, December 1997)
Another Mario Kart 64 type of game but with a cool new quest mode in this great 128meg (the first game of that size for N64) game. Very cute graphics but you should still give it a chance despite that! It's quite challenging too.

95 DONKEY KONG 64 (Nintendo/Rare, December 1999)

Donkey Kong 64 was Nintendo's big holiday release in 1999 and some people liked it and some people didn't. Here's my opinion on this huge 3d platform game.
Donkey Kong must now rescue his friends and stop King Rrool plan of destroying Donkey Kong Island. With 5unique characters (Donkey, Diddy, Tiny, Lanky, and Chunky Kong) and more stuff to do than Super Mario64 or Banjo Kazooie before it, Donkey Kong64 should keep you busy for a while. Plus the original 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game is in here too, complete with all four levels. It's way too easy to get lost in this huge 256meg game though but you still shouldn't miss it.

NEW!!
73 DR. MARIO 64 (Nintendo, April 2001)
Dr. Mario is back and the big question is why? Sure! The Dr. Mario game was fun back than but did anybody really want a sequel to Dr. Mario in the first pace, especially on the all powerful N64? I wanted a sequel to Super Mario 64 and not another puzzle game originally from the NES. This always seems to happen when a Nintendo system starts to die, puzzle games like Wario's Woods and Yoshi on the 8-bit NES and Tetris Attack on the SNES and here we are now with the N64 close in demise with this game.
The really simple puzzle style gameplay returns has Mario drops multi-coloured pills to kill all of the three different cute looking viruses in a huge bottle. The game is so easy to learn that anyone could play it but that was the major problem with the original game to begin with............ it was too simple when compared to other games like Super Mario or Tetris. The difference now is that you can Save your high scores and other features right to the cartridge (no memory pak needed) to increase the replay value. There are also new play modes like Story, Classic and Endless selections to try out if you like.
The graphics are fairly lackluster and it looks like a Super Nintendo game and not an N64 game (not a single polygon to be found) and there are only 4 music tracks available and they're really not that good either, only the classic ones were interesting. You can tell that Dr. Mario 64 was produced on a small budget.
The 4player games are also a big bonus to already addictive and fun game. Not bad for $40 Canadian but I would rent it first and try it out on some friends before you lay down that kinda cash.

74 EXTREME G (Acclaim, 1997)

NEW!!
65 FIGHTER DESTINY 2 (Southpeak/Genki, 2000)
Other than a slight miss spelling of the original name, it's the same fighting game really. Some of the newer characters look really goofy and the series hasn't changed much in three years. Still good because of the cool point system but I like the first one better.

76 FIGHTER'S DESTINY (Ocean/Genki, 1997)

78 FLYING DRAGON (Natsume/Culture Brain, 1998)
The Flying Dragon series has been around for years and now it comes to the Nintendo 64. Although I was never a huge fan of the past games, like most people, but this game was fairly entertaining because of the nice RPG elements. One game is a Virtua Fighter/Tekken like game with 8realistic looking characters and the other mode is more of a cute RPG/fighting quest for items. The frame rate lags a little on both games but this one additive fighter once learned. Try it and see if you agree?

75 F ZERO X (Nintendo, 1998)
Fast and smooth at 60frames per second and 30hovercrafts on screen at once, but you just race the whole time, there are no weapons like in Wipe Out or Extreme G. It's fun............ I just wish there was more to do.

68 GOEMON'S GREAT ADVENTURE (Konami, 1999)

16 HEY YOU PIKACHU (Nintendo/Game Freak, December 10, 2000)
Bbboorring! BBbrorringg! I feel so stupid talking into the mic and the Pikachu creature doesn't respond half the time. If that wasn't bad enough the game is really slow paced and doesn't even look that great (come on, the N64 can do better than this). This game should be called F*** You Pikachu!

76 KIRBY 64 The Crystal Shards (Nintendo/Hal, July 2000)
"Yes! It's cool to see Kirby back again!" Being a huge fan of Kirby's Super Star and Kirby's Dream Land 3 (both on the ol' Super Nintendo) I was curious to see what this new game was like.
The Kirby games have never been hard games but they were always fun and this game is no exception. Kirby 64 is a simple but fun little 256meg platformer that's way too short and easy for its own good. Basic but cool multi-players modes too. Rent it!

20 KNIFE EDGE (Kemco, 1998)
a stupid light gun game with no light gun. OK?! WHY??

96 LEGEND OF ZELDA: Majora's Mask (Nintendo, October 26 2000)
With the death of the N64 almost here, Nintendo actually releases another Zelda sequel. Nintendo didn't even release a second Zelda game for the Super Nintendo! How good can Majora's Mask be anyways, especially after the amazing Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time? Not too bad actually, not bad at all.
First off you NEED a Expansion Pak to play Majora's Mask, so if you know you got one in the N64 Ram pak then you play the game. It's not only contiunes where the Ocarira of Time left off but it introduces new a 72hours mode............. don't finish the game in that time and the whole world is destroyed. Very unique.
Link (the hero) is suddenly attacked after his horse Epony is spooked by two sneaky fiaries. Link gets throw'd off his horse and he gets knocked out. When Link wakes up he watches a strange kid with a huge mask on looking and digging through some of his stuff. After a brief fight the Masked kid escapes into a small cave and has Link enters the cave he falls into a odd pit and teleported into an altered universe. To make matters worse, Link is now transformed into an plantsrub creature by the evil masked kid and the altered world he is now in is about to be destroyed by the incoming moon in the sky. Link must now figure out how to stop the moon from destroying the world before it's too late.

You start your adventure in a huge clock tower that's part of a four part town named Clock Town which is just under the freaky looking moon, it's interesting to see the town people's reaction and worry has each day goes by. There is a new guage at the bottom-middle at the screen to measure just how time you have left and only certain objectives can be completed at the right time so you're gonna need this new clock. Another new thing about this new Zelda is now there is no way to Save your game from the menu screen like in Ocarina of Time. To save your game now you have to get back your sloten Ocarina that was a gift from Princess Zelda (kinda annoying but that's the only way to save you progress).

97 LEGEND OF ZELDA: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, November 24 1998)
The ultimate action RPG that should take about a month to fully finish. Some parts of the game are either too hard or too easy and there is little to do after the game is finished, but these are the only things that kept me from giving this game a perfect score. A awesome 256meg (the first 256meg game for the N64) action/adventure.

36 MAGICAL TETRIS CHALLENGE (Capcom, January 1999)
So, this is Capcom's first ever N64 title, eh? How good is it? Well, not only is this another Tetris game we don't need (the New Tetris was released earlier in that year on the N64 by the way) but you can tell that Capcom really didn't place a lot of effort in this one despite the Disney and Tetris licenses.
There's no save feature or gamepak options, so what's the point of playing if you can't keep your high scores... it sucks! Rent it if you want.

85 MARIO KART 64 (Nintendo, 1997)

Whoa! This game rocks! Ms. Pac Man must find four crystals to rescue a stolen princess. You just have to use the Cross Pad throughout the whole game and the other buttons are hardly touched, making for a easy to get into experience. Plus this game also has the original Ms. Pac Man 1982 arcade game too, which is perfect for the retro fans still out there.

72 QUEST 64 (THQ/Intelligent Systems, 1998)
The first ever fully 3D RPG on a console system that has a cool grid battle system but a weak storyline. A young magican named Brian searches for his missing father but his mission soon becomes much bigger has he tries to recover the stones of Fire, Water, Wind, Earth. I fealt this game this game was a little underrated because it was still fairly challenging and the graphics were very colourful. If you're looking for a good RPG then Quest 64 shouldn't disappoint.

"this game is crazy", the shortcuts and jumps are awesome and really gave the Rush series a edge over the other racing games out there. Unfortunately the controls are very unforgiven and the fog is very thick.

85 SAN FRANCISCO RUSH 2049 (Midway, 2000)
Another great sequel by Midway. The graphics are really improved and most of the fog that in the last two Rush games are gone. The Dreamcast version may be better than this but it's still a great game if you have the N64.

62 SHADOWGATE 64 Trial of the four Towers (Kemco, 1999)
it's boring wondering around, but the tough puzzles should keep you busy though. If you loved the overrated PC or NES shadowgate games than this game is for you.

58 SOUTH PARK (Acclaim, December 1998)
Funny for the first few days anyways but this Turok-like shoot em up is just way too hard, especially some of those bosses. A great rental but pales in comparison to Conker's Bad Fur Day.

18 SOUTH PARK RALLY (Acclaim, 2000)
A confusing idea for a racer. "Why is everybody copying Mario Kart all of a sudden??"

68 SPACE INVADERS (Activision/Taito, December 1999)
a cool update with a unique powerup system. The presentation could be better though.

Overrated! This is a strange and dull puzzle game.

94 STAR FOX 64 (Nintendo, August 1997)
The best 3Dshooter ever! The graphics are really foggy and the music is very plain but the game easily makes up for it with 15 different themed levels and fun multi-player modes. This game also started the Rumble Pak craze by being the first console game to feature joystick feedback. Very innovative!

GAME OF THE MONTH COLLECTION!!
87 STAR SOLDIER: Vanishing Earth  (Electro Brain/Hudson, December 1998)
A classic 2Dshooter update where the score matters. I love the 2 and 5 minute modes in this game. A very addictive game that keeps me coming back.

73 STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 RACER  (Nintendo/Lucas Arts, May 1999)
The very VERY fast game but AI can be too hard in some levels. It's only the pod racing part of the movie and nothing thing else, so it's feels like a rip-off for all that money I guess. Nice smooth graphics.

67 STAR WARS: Rogue Squadron (Lucas Arts, December 2, 1998)
Killer graphics but overall not as good as Star Fox64. Some levels are unplayable thanks to the unfair difficulty. For serious Star Wars fans only.

75 STAR WARS: SHADOWS Of The EMPIRE  (Lucas Arts, November 1996)

33 SUPERMAN (Titus, 1999)

92 SUPER MARIO 64 (Nintendo, September 30, 1996)
The first N64game ever where "you gotta collect those stars (120 of them to be exact)!" A long and challenging 64meg game in a fully interactive 3Duniverse with 15worlds to explore. It's a great game but there's no reason to play it after you found all the 120stars. Still a must play!

91 SUPER SMASH BROS. (Nintendo, April 26, 1999)
A cool idea for a fighter and it's 4players too! Pick from Mario, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Samus, Kirby, Link, Yoshi, Fox McCloud and 4hidden characters, has you try to knock one another out of the gaming arena. Very flesh and different!

90 TETRISPHERE (Nintendo/H2O, 1997)
Ever wonder what Tetris would look like in 3D? Although its been done before, in Tetrisphere it been done right! Beleive it or not Tetrisphere was originally suppose to be an Atari Jaguar game but it got canceled and when Atari started to fall apart. Tetrisphere was then introduced has a new N64 title but the game didn't really get a lot of hype or press because of the lack of popularity of puzzle games at the time.
A very additive 3Dpuzzle game with tons of options and over a 100levels.
The graphics and music are some of the best if not thee best in any puzzle game ever.
'One of a kind'.

54 TUROK 2: Seeds of Evil (Acclaim, December, 1998)

85 WAVE RACE 64 (Nintendo, October 1996)

61 WCW BACKSTAGE ASSUALT (EA, December 15, 2000)
I actaully liked this new wrestling game although it still has a lot of the problems that plagued EA's WCW Mayham. First off the game looks absolutely horrible with stiff and low detailed wrestlers and blurry arenas but it's cool to unlock all of the secrets in the game like hidden characters and more areas. Kinda addictive and very brutal.
One major complaint; why can't the great Lance Storm do his finishing move 'The Maple Leaf', uh!?

46 WCW MAYHAM (EA, August 1999)
Horrible presentation ruin EA's first chance at the WCW franchise. A lot of the popular characters need to be unlocked first which hurts the game. The animation is also weak especially when compared with WWF 2000.

76 WCW/NWO REVENGE (THQ/Asmik, October 1998)
Better than EA's over hyped WCW Mayham, even after a year. Plays similar to THQ's WrestleMania2000 but there is no create a player option or career mode either.

72 WIPEOUT 64 (Midway/Psychosis, December 1998)
The new analog control and new 4player mode help this aging racing series out but it's still a little too linear with its limited gameplay. I wouldn't leave it in the discount though.

50 WWF ATTITUDE (Acclaim, August 1999)

92 WWF NO MERCY!! (THQ/Asmik, November 15, 2000)
This new wrestling game by THQ features even better gameplay and more options than last year's mega hit WWF Wrestlemania2000. It also has smoother looks and less flickers all around. It's very easy to get into with tons of modes like a Smackdown Mall to buy moves and items and a brand new Survival mode, plus don't forget the new ladder matches and backstage matches too. There's some slowdown on the 4player games but it's no big deal once you get use to it. Very addictive and great for wrestling fans. Where's the Big Show!??

86 WWF WRESTLEMANIA 2000 (THQ/Asmik, 1999)
It's plays a lot like last years WCW REVENGE but slightly better this time, thanks to a new Career mode and new Create a player options in this huge 256meg game. The main problem is the Road to Wrestlemania is way too hard cause the computer always gets seems the first hit in and if you do to well on the road to Wrestlemania, Mr. Mcmanon will steal your World title part way through and you'll get the crappy ending no matter what.

67 YOSHI'S STORY (Nintendo, March 1998)
